Dave, K8CC, wrote “I think there are two mobile teams still to be heard from
with their final plans: N9NE/m and K8BB/m. If N9NE could hit GOGE and IRON,
we'd have the Upper Peninsula covered.”

I see that Jeff, KE9US, will try to make his way up to his cabin on
snow-covered ‘roads’ (sic) to Gibb City in IRON County. I had the pleasure
of meeting with him for a nice conversation at my motel in Iron River last
year.

I’ve been hanging back on making a commitment to roving the UP this year. At
this point it would seem that I have a slightly better-than-even probability
of making the annual trek. Aside from this infernal and eternal winter
weather, the big challenge is getting my little Toyota Yaris outfitted for
operation ... my particular concern is being able to radiate a decent 80M
signal with such a small ground plane. I’ll be bonding the hood, doors, and
hatchback tomorrow in hopes of extending the ‘counterpoise’. Mike, N8MR,
wrote me that he is making his run with a similar-size Honda Fit. We should
have some good notes to compare after the ‘test. With the price of petrol
now approaching $3.50 a gallon, I thought it time that I give the small car
a workout, as it gets close to 40 mpg on the highway. If you’ve ever seen
this car (it looks a bit like an egg), you’d probably be wondering how I
could get 20/40/75/ and 80M antennas mag-mounted up on its rounded roof. So
am I!

So Dave, if you want to put me down for the following counties without a
firm commitment until about Thursday, you can pen me in for IRON, GOGE,
ONTO, HOUG, BARA, DICK, and MENO. I may circle back to a couple of the
counties to catch the late 80M crowd.
