[MiQP-Mail] Michigan Tech

If you go back a ways W8YY was always on in MiQP. When it used to be in
May it always coincided with exam week.

We used to win the UP plaque a lot.

W8YY has a big disadvantage which you wouldn't think would be a problem
on the 6th Floor of Wadsworth Hall. Looking north from the 6th floor
you have a great view of the campus, Portage Lake, and into the hill on
the other side of the lake. Looking south the antenna points directly
into a hill. Wadsworth Hall is built into that hill, in the front of
the building you enter on the ground floor but the rear entrances enter
between the 3rd and 4th floors. Definitely no height advantage.

My favorite W8YY story came in the 2001 MiQP.

Ken, W8MJ and I were out covering all the U.P. counties mobile that
year. We were CQing away on 40M SSB while driging thru the middle of
downtown Houghton, and all of a sudden the IC-756 S-meter slams hard
against the pin and someone is asking "Where are you guys?". I reply
"This is K8CC mobile and we're in downtown Houghton". The station
calling us was W8YY, and the op immediately invited us to come visit
them at their station. Unfortunately. we had to decline their gracious
invitation because we were on a tight schedule, on our way north thru
town into Keewenaw County.

I'm don't recall whether W8YY actively participated in MiQP that year,
but it was fun running into them nonetheless.
