N1MM is free - quite a steep learning curve if you're used to
"typical" software, but is very, very powerful, all sorts of

"help" files and the "operating manual" seem to be written by
the experts for the experts. I learned what I know from a
couple very helpful Elmers, one locally, and another on the MRRC
reflector. Many other times, before the "Elmers" stepped
forward, would say "read the help manual" and consider me an
idiot (to which I totally agree) when I can't find the answer in
the documentation.
W3KM General Logger claims to work. It is free. It has
several deficiencies when compared to the "high powered" logging
software like N1MM.

To me, it's a matter of getting used to something, familiarity
is worth quite a few $$'s, and limits frustration during the
heat of a contest.
