Another very good option for beginning contesters would be to find a
multi-op that is taking place in your area.  Even if you just go and plug
your headphones into a splitter and listen for most of the contest you will
learn ....... and I'd be willing that they will let you sit down and
operate, too.

I know that's how we run our K8EPV Multi's in St Clair County - whether it's
MI QP or Field Day - anyone sitting around gets to operate ..... and not
just at midnight or the slow times.
